Shadowfever Excerpt #2!!!

Whooo hooo!! Another Shadowfever teaser and this is a doozie!! In case you aren't aware Shadowfever is the final installment of Karen Marie Moning's urban fantasy series and doesn't release until December of this year. If you would like to learn more about this totally ADDICTING series, click here for my review of Faefever which goes on to explain what the series is about.

Enjoy!

Her pace quickens and she races down the corridor, passing soundlessly over obsidian floors, laughing with joy.

I know that sound. I love that sound. It means her lover is near.

He is coming. She feels his approach.

He is so powerful! It's what first drew her to him. She’d never encountered anyone like him.

She was awed that he chose her.

She is awed every day that he continues choosing her.

The stuff of him explodes through from his side in the Court of Shadows, telling her he comes, filling her home (prison) where she lives a fabulous life (a sentence not of her choosing) surrounded by everything she wants (illusions, she misses her world, so far away and all of them long dead) and waits for him with hope (ever growing despair.)

He will carry her to his big, dark bed and do things to her until his black wings open wide, so wide, eclipsing the world, and when he is inside her nothing else will matter but the moment, their dark, intense lust, the endless passion they share.

No matter what else he is—he is hers.

What is between them is without blame.

Love knows no right or wrong.

Love is. Only is.

Review - Provocative in Pearls

Title: Provocative in Pearls
Author: Madeline Hunter
Publishing Date: March 2010
Genre: Historical
Rating: B+
Sensuality: Hot
Book Disclosure: I purchased a new copy.

Provocative in Pearls is the second book in Madeline Hunter's Rarest Blooms quartet. The Earl of Hawkeswell has been living in limbo for two years ever since his Bride disappeared on the day of their wedding. Some of her things were found in the Thames and it is thought she must have drowned. Verity ran away after she was betrayed by her cousin. She assumed Hawkeswell was in on it since he was only marrying her for her money. Hawkeswell finds Varity at The Rarest Blooms on a chance visit. Now these two must move forward and learn to reconcile their differences.

I really am a sucker for Madeline Hunter's writing style. Her books seem more cerebral, yet still balanced with plenty of external conflict. Verity and Hawkeswell are very compatible in bed, but their relationship needs work in other areas. Hunter is not afraid to use physical intimacy as a way to bring her main couple closer. Hawkeswells’ journey from lusting after Verity to falling in love with her is truly delightful. This evolution is believable because it happens within a reasonable time frame.

Verity was easy to like. She has a quiet strength that clearly impresses Hawkeswell. I liked that she eventually came to terms with her marriage and stopped running from it. There were plenty of opportunities for sheer stubbornness, but common sense ruled. Hawkeswell was just a great a character. Although, I do feel that I learned less about him than I did Verity. The story seemed to center around her more. I am really enjoying this series and I can't wait for the other two books.

Review - Definitely Dead

Title: Definitely Dead
Author: Charlaine Harris
Publishing Date: 2006
Genre: Urban Fantasy/Mystery
Rating: B
Sensuality: Subtle
Book Disclosure: I downloaded the audio version to my iPod.

Definitely Dead is the sixth full length novel in Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mystery series. In this book Sookie goes to New Orleans to clean up her cousin’s apartment. Her cousin Hadley was a vampire who died and left her things to Sookie. When Sookie gets to Hadley's apartment she uncovers the body of a man stuffed in a closet. With the help of a witch Amelia, Sookie discovers what happened.

So this was my first audio book and a big concern of mine was whether or not I would be able to concentrate enough to listen and comprehend the story while driving or doing chores. I was pleasantly surprised that for the most part I followed along just fine. The narrator Johanna Parker did a good job. I think it helps that the story is told in first person so the narration fits.

On to the review... well I felt this was a fine installment. Some of the romantic entanglements are tidied with this book. Finally I feel like Sookie is getting a normal boyfriend with Quinn. I like that their relationship starts out conventionally with him asking her out on a date. Quite a few surprises about Sookie are revealed to keep the series fresh and interesting. I wish I could talk about one reveal involving Bill, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who isn't caught up with this series. For those of you who know what I am referring to with my cryptic statement feel free to comment.

Yeah, this is a lazy review. What can I say that I already haven't said about this series? For fun I have added links to all the reviews for the previous books in the series. If you aren't familiar with this series, check out my other reviews.

Amethyst Destiny - New Time Travel

One of my favorite sub-genres in the romance category is time travel. I love the juxtaposition of a modern woman with an old-fashioned man. I just came across Amethyst Destiny by Pamela Montgomerie in my RT Book Reviews magazine. They gave it four and 1/2 stars.

Julia Brodie ignores her Scottish cousin's orders not to touch the antique-looking necklace until she gets back to New York, and finds herself yanked back to seventeenth-century Scotland. Talon thinks his own magic ring delivered the petite beauty to him to help him succeed in his latest mission. But when his mission puts her in mortal danger, he begins to realize love is the greatest magic of all. Excerpt

Review - Pleasure of a Dark Prince

Title: Pleasure of a Dark Prince
Author: Kresley Cole
Publishing Date: February 2010
Genre: Paranormal
Rating: B
Sensuality: Hot
Book Disclosure: I purchased a new copy.

Pleasure of a Dark Prince is the seventh full length book in Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series. I have waited a really long time for Garreth and Lucia's story, so long in fact that I almost forgot about this couple. See, these two were sequel bait in the first book A Hunger Like No Other. It seemed for a long while there that they were never going to get their story and then bam, SURPRIZE.

Lucia made a pact with a Goddess as she was dying. The deal was Lucia would live to become the greatest archer of all time in exchange for her chastity. Lucia was happy to give up sex, as her first experience at the hands of a demon was a horrible one. Centuries later however, this deal comes back to haunt her as Garreth MacRieve stirs her blood as no man has before. Garreth is a werewolf. Werewolves are mated for life to only one woman. Lucia is his mate and he wants so very badly to claim her but because of her vows she won't let him. And if that isn't enough, add to the mix a mission to kill an evil God before he is let loose on the world.

Pleasure of a Dark Prince has all of Kresley Cole's signature components fans of this series are familiar with. You have the very independent, modern heroine and the fiercely determined hero who will stop at nothing to win his woman's heart. Add to that the impossible conflicts surrounding their relationship which leaves the reader on pins and needles wondering how everything will work out in the end. Along the way are plenty of laughs and snappy dialogue.

I am a huge fan of this series. However, I feel that it is losing its edge. I just have to wonder to myself, "Where is this series going?" I have felt that with the last two books there doesn't seem to be defined focal point. Things are starting to get vague and now the series timeline is overlapping. I guess I wish that there would be more focus on things leading up to the Accession. Although, there was some major sequel baiting in this book, with major conflicts ramping up. I just hope Cole knows where she is going with this.

Review - Eleven on Top

Title: Eleven on Top
Author: Janet Evanovich
Publishing Date: 2005
Genre: Mystery
Rating: B
Sensuality: Subtle
Book Disclosure: I received a new copy from my friend who works for Barnes and Noble. This is one of those books where they rip of the cover and throw it away.

Eleven on Top is the eleventh book in the Stephanie Plum series. If you aren't familiar with this series (Seriously? Have you been living under a rock?) Stephanie is a bounty hunter - a very bad bounty hunter who is always in trouble, but fortunately has uncanny good luck. She can't decide between the two men in her life, Joe a cop and Ranger a fellow bounty hunter and owner of RangeMan security. In this installment Stephanie is fed up with being a bounty hunter. She quits her job but is having trouble finding a new one. She gets fired from three different jobs before Ranger hires her.

This series is a comfort to me. The characters are like old friends I enjoy visiting for a little bit. I know exactly what I'll get when reading these books, a good mystery with a lot of hilarity and high jinks. Eleven on Top was just what I needed to perk up my reading enthusiasm.

This wasn't my favorite in the series, mainly because I am wondering why Stephanie can't choose between Joe and Ranger. The choice is obvious to me. Why it isn't to her is beyond me. I already know that I have a handful of more books to read and from what I hear Stephanie still hasn't come to a decision. I think the books are entertaining and fun and I am glad that I still have more books to look forward too. I would not recommend reading these books back-to-back, though because they might seem overly formulaic. One a month is about as close as I can recommend.

This book can be purchased in print or kindle format from Amazon.

Loot and Links

It has been a while since I did one of these posts. There are a couple of reasons for this, this first is because I haven't been keeping up with my google reader. I am pretty much in the dark about what has been going on in the blogging world for the last three weeks. I have over 360 unread posts in google reader. I am extrememly anal retentive when it comes to my google reader and this is a lot.

The second reason is because I have been trying not to buy any more books. Last time I bought books was at the Central Florida blogger meet and greet. I went with Kris to this awesome bookstore that caters to romance. Well, it turns out that I just couldn't stay away. The store is easily an hour away from my home and I just had this need to go back. So that is where I spent my Saturday afternoon. I managed to only buy 5 books, which I think shows my restraint. Although, I did manage to put a few requests in with the owner because she didn't have all the books I wanted in stock. She did however have Provacative in Pearls, which is the one I really wanted above all the others!

These I bought new:

These I bought used:

As for links, I don't have many to talk about because I am so behind. However, there is one thing that I would like to mention and that is the fun event of DA BWAHA, the romance reader's version of March Madness put on by Dear Author and the Smart Bitches. I filled out my bracket in the hopes of kicking some major butt! The first round has been completed and now the second round has commenced. Even if you didn't fill out a bracket you can still vote here on the books. So far I am doing okay but not great. It's hard to say how this year is going to play out because a lot of great books are going up against each other and it is difficult to choose. Be sure to check it out if you are so inclined. It really is fun!

Review - Magic Burns

Title: Magic Burns
Author: Ilona Andrews
Publishing Date: 2008
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: B
Sensuality: Subtle
Book Disclosure: Borrowed a copy from the library.

Magic Burns is book two in Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series. In Kate's world magic is a part of life, but when magic is up, technology is down. The magic always comes and goes but recently it has been coming more and more frequently and sporadically. These are signs of an oncoming Flare. This could be really dangerous as the type of magical beings gain more power during the Flare. Kate has her hands full as she finds a young girl orphaned and in need of help. Kate has no maternal instincts, but she can't stand to see anyone suffer so she takes the girl home with her and begins a search for the girl's mother.

I have to admit that it had been a few months since I read the first book in this series, Magic Bites and I couldn't exactly recall what happened in that book. At least with Magic Burns, the reader now gets a better sense of Kate's personality. Told in the first person, Kate narrates the story. I didn't realize it, but Kate is a bleeding heart. I can't exactly call her a sucker, because she isn't. She really is quite the Badass. She would however do anything in her power to protect those she feels are deserving such as the young girl, Julie.

Still the reader is guessing who Kate is and what exactly her powers are. There is a lot of sexual tension between Kate and Curran, the King of the Beasts. I love that the romance is slowly unfolding, but I think some readers might feel things are moving too slow. There is a lot of world building and a lot of descriptions of various creatures. Half of it I could imagine and the other half was beyond me. However, I am enjoying this series and think it's best not to let too much time lapse between books. The reader will definitely benefit by reading the books in order.

Review - SEALed with a Ring

Title: SEALed with a Ring
Author: Mary Margaret Daughtridge
Publishing Date: March 2010
Genre: Contemporary
Rating: A
Sensuality: Hot
Book Disclosure: I received an ARC from the publisher.

After JJ learns some very bad news from her lawyer, at a wedding no less and she runs into a handsome SEAL who is bound and determined to cheer her up. JJ impulsively accepts his offer of a night of passion. Even though it's the best sex of her life, she regrets her one night stand. A year passes and wouldn't you know it she runs into Davy at another wedding. Only Davy doesn't seem to remember the night they shared. The problem is JJ needs a husband if she is to keep her family's car business. Thinking that Davy will be headed back to duty in the military she proposes modern day marriage of convenience. Only things are much more complicated than JJ could have foreseen.

I'll just tell you right now, Mary Margaret Daughtridge has yet to write a book I didn't love. With her third book, again she has delivered and with one of my favorite themes - marriage of convenience. I love how Daughtridge is able to bring to life what makes a man a SEAL. Her characters, most notably her male leads, come across as real men and not fictional superheroes. It's like she somehow gets into the mind of the male psyche and is giving away their secrets.

Daughtridge takes these extraordinary characters and puts them in ordinary situations that every reader can relate too. I love how she is able to make everyday life seem interesting and special. The pieces of JJ and David’s story slowly unfold, revealing a truly lovely and priceless romance. These two are by no means perfect, but neither is willing to give up on the on the other. If you haven't ever read Mary Margaret Daughtridge, I highly recommend you do.

Review - Tears of the Moon

Title: Tears of the Moon
Author: Nora Roberts
Publishing Date: 2000
Genre: Contemporary (with a small paranormal element)
Rating: B+
Sensuality: Warm
Book Disclosure: I purchased a used copy of this book.

Brenna O'Toole has been in love with Shawn Gallagher since she was a young girl. They grew up together and have always been the best of friends. Brenna decides that she is going to finally take the bull by the horns, so to speak. She tells Shawn she wants to have sex with him. She thinks that by having sex she'll be able to get him out of her system and move on with her life. She shocks the hell out of Shawn, but after he’s gotten used to the idea he begins to court Brenna himself.

Tears of the Moon is the second book in Nora Robert's Irish Trilogy. The book takes place in modern day Ireland. I have to say that this is one of Robert's better books. The characterization just blew me away. Brenna and Shawn will live in my memory long after finishing the book. Brenna is very independent with a lot of drive and fierce determination. Once she knows what she wants, she goes for it. She is not afraid to state her feelings and tell people exactly what she is thinking. Shawn is much more subtle in his actions. He is quietly content to live in the moment, stop and smell the roses. Both are very strong in their convictions, yet how they deal with people is very different. The reader will easily see how well these two compliment each other’s personalities.

The story is completely focused on the romance between Shawn and Brenna. That's not to say there isn't other stuff taking place in the book, because there is a large cast of characters. Most of them make up Shawn and Brenna's family and they play a large role in bring Shawn and Brenna together. For those readers who enjoy family relationships as well as friends to lovers theme, won't want to miss this one! If you missed my "Guess the Book" post earlier, you might want to check it out for a fun passage!

Review - Skin Game

Title: Skin Game
Author: Ava Gray
Publishing Date: 2009
Genre: Paranormal
Rating: B-
Sensuality: Hot
Book Disclosure: I purchased a used copy of this book.

Kyra has a special gift which she has learned to use to her advantage. When she touches a person, whatever that person's talents are get transfered to Kyra for a short while. After her father is savagely murdered at the hands of Gerard Serrano the owner of a casino in Las Vegas, Kyra manages to walk away with three million dollars and Serrano's pride. Serrano hires the hitman Reyes to find his money and kill her. After Reyes catches up with Kyra, he finds that he is unable to complete his job. It seems Serrano lied to him about exactly who Kyra is.

Skin Game starts off pretty hot and heavy. Right from the beginning the sexual tension between Kyra and Reyes leaps off the pages. The first intimate scene is sizzling. Then these two characters begin a courtship of sorts. Reyes must win Kyra's trust if he is to find out where the money is hidden. This part of the story is kind of sweet how Reyes is willing to take care of Kyra. But, Reyes is hiding exactly who he is from Kyra most of the story. This leads to that oh so annoying "big misunderstanding" that is quite common in romance novels. Eventually, this leads to a bit of frustration for the reader at the end of the story because Kyra should have known the truth based on Reyes actions. This made the ending’s pacing drag.

One thing that I found surprising was the level of violence in the book. It's definitely not for the faint of heart. Kyra's level of vindictiveness gave me pause more than once. It made me more than a little uncomfortable. There is a secondary romance between Kyra's best friend, Mia. She has her own story out this summer in Skin Tight. Be sure to be on the lookout for that. Even though this book had its share of problems, I will be getting Ava Grey's next release.

Review - Dead as a Doornail

Title: Dead as a Doornail
Author: Charlaine Harris
Publishing Date: 2005
Genre: Paranormal/Mystery
Rating: B+
Sensuality: Subtle
Book Disclosure: I recieved a new copy as a gift from a friend. (My friend is not connected the book industry).

Dead as a Doornail is the 5th book in the Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris. A sniper is at large in Sookie's small town. The victims of the shootings all have one thing in common, shifter blood. One of Sookie's own family members is in danger, as well as her good friend Sam. She plans to uncover the shooter's identity before any more people get hurt, but as usual Sookie finds herself the one in need of help.

This series just keeps getting better and better. I am really having a hard time deciding on which book is my favorite so far. The world building is very good and keeps getting more and more interesting. There are more characters and new supernatural creatures that are being introduced. What's up with the fairies? That is what I'd like to know!

From a romance standpoint, I want to know what direction the series is going to go in. Sookie has about a half-dozen men vying for her attention. It makes me really curious as to who Sookie is going to choose to be her beau. At this point, I am not really sure who I am rooting for and I suppose that Sookie feels the same way. I do hope that she is going to get her happy ever after at some point, though.

Guess the Book #4

Since I had so much fun with the last one, I thought I would play again. Can you guess out of which book this passage came?

Instantly his spine stiffened, his eyes narrowed, and a prickly ball bounced around in his gut.

"Smells good," B--- said easily and sniffed the air. "Would that be crubeens you're doing there? I doubt we'll have such fare in Waterford City."

She was wearing paint, and sparkly things at her ears. And for God's sake a dress - one that didn't leave the matter of curves to a man's imagination and showed a great deal of slim, well muscled leg.

"What are you doing, done up like that?"

"Having dinner with D--- and her Dubliners." She'd rather, much rather pull up a chair at the table, snag a portion and tuck into the crubeens, but she'd given her word. And that was that.

"You're going out with a man you've never laid eyes on."

"D--- has, and I'd best go up and drag her away from her mirror or she'll primp another hour and I'll never get my dinner."

"Just a damn minute."

His tone alone would have stopped her, it was very sharp and un-S---like. But even before she could turn back, he had her arm. "Well, what's lit into you, then?"

"Perfume, too," he said in disgust, as he got a good, heady whiff of her scent. "I should've known it. Well, you can just turn staight around and go back home. I'm not having you go off dressed like this."

Temper would have snapped out, would have bitten him on the neck, but it couldn't get through the thick wall of shock. "You're not having it? Dressed like what?"

"I'm not, no. And you know very well dressed like what. It's surprised I am that your mother let you out of the house this way."

"I'm twenty-four, if you've forgotten. My mother stopped approving my choice of attire some years ago. And it's surely no business of yours what I'm wearing."

"I'm making it my business. Now go home and wash that stuff off your face."

"I'll do nothing of the sort." The fact was, she'd used the lipstick and so forth only because she knew D--- would have slathered twice as much on her if she'd shown up without it. But there was no reason to mention that, especially since that temper was busily gnawing through the shock.

"Fine, then, I'll do for you here and now." He hauled her up under one arm, ignoring her shrieked curse and the fist that swiped at his temple and carted her toward the sink. He had a vision through the black haze of his fury of dumping her in headfirst and turning the water on full and ice cold.

Are you clammoring for more, yet?

Review - Tortured

Title: Tortured
Author: Amanda McIntyre
Publishing Date: 2009
Genre: Historical (Erotic)
Rating: B-
Sensuality: Hot
Book Disclosure: I purchased this book new.

Tortured takes place during the Dark Ages after the Romans pulled out of Britannia. Sierra works as an apprentice to an executioner. She was forced to this position as a twelve year old after she witnessed the rape and death of her mother. Six years have passed and Sierra has managed to survive by take each day at a time. When her master has captured a rebel soldier, he orders Sierra to work him over for information. Only Sierra is drawn to Dryston and they formulate a plan to escape.

I picked out this book because Amanda McIntyre will be at the RT Convention this year and also because it was set in a time period other than the standard Regency that is so prevalent today. I will admit I was a little worried that there would be too much written about the torture. Plus, this book is published by the Harlequin Spice line and it is an "Erotic Novel" and that means I might not get my happy ever after. Fortunately I needn't have worried. Although, the reality of life was very hard back then, the author didn't dwell on it and managed to balance the dark with the light.

I really thought that the author did a good job with making the characters ring true to the time period. The reader will feel like they have traveled back in time. The political upheaval made for very desperate and uncertain times. The reader will feel the characters desperation, yet underneath is a sense of longing and hope.

I did have some problems with Tortured. Sierra has learned that in order to survive she has to contain her feelings. To reveal them might be her death. It would have been nice to see Sierra really break through these emotional bonds, especially by the end of the story. When Sierra goes back to confront her captor with all the animosity she felt towards him, the ending seemed anti-climatic because Sierra never really loses control emotionally. Also, I never really bought into the passion between Sierra and Dryston. I felt like something was missing and this could again lead back to Sierra's emotional disconnection.

1st Shadowfever Excerpt!

As many of you know, I am a HUGE Karen Marie Moning fan and I absolutely LOVE her Fever series. I am dying for the final installment of the series. Unfortunately, it doesn't release until the end of December. However, Karen is usually generous enough to give us little teasers each month with excerpts from Shadowfever. Here is this months teaser:

It's funny the things people say when someone dies.

He/she is in a better place.

How the f#ck do you know that?

Life goes on.

That's supposed to comfort me? I'm excrutiatingly aware that life goes on. It hurts every damned second. How lovely to know it's going to continue like this. Thank you for reminding me.

Time heals.

No, it doesn't. At best, time is the great leveler, sweeping us all into coffins. We find ways to distract ourselves from the pain. Time is neither scalpel nor bandage. It is indifferent. Scar tissue is not a good thing. It is merely the wound's other face.

I live with the specter of Alina every day. Now I will live with this ghost, too. Walk between them, one on my right, one on my left. They will talk to me incessantly. I'll never escape, bridged between my greatest failures.

Review - Pride Mates

Title: Pride Mates: Shifters Unbound
Author: Jennifer Ashley
Publication Date: February 2010
Genre: Paranormal
Rating: C
Sensuality: Hot
Book Disclosure: I purchased this book new.

Pride Mates is the first book is a new Shifter series by Jennifer Ashley. Kim Fraiser is a lawyer who has been assigned the duty of defending a shifter who is charged with murdering his human girlfriend. In this world Shifters are forced to wear magical collars which inhibit the violent behaviors of shifters. They are segregated from humans and are forced to live in communities referred to as Shiftertowns. As Kim starts her investigation she has to learn more about shifters and she goes to Liam Morrissey for help. He is the sexy son of the local clan leader.

Let's start out with what I liked about this story. In the beginning, Kim has to learn about the world and hierarchy in which the shifters live. Most humans don't have any clue as to how the shifters live. They are aware of their existence, but that is about it. This happened to be the most interesting part of the book for me. Also, Kim and Liam have a lot of sexual tension upon their first meeting. And those first scenes were a lot of fun to read.

Unfortunately, as the book continued on my level of attention started to wan. The writing became clunky and the characters felt superficial. I never was able to fully connect with Kim or Liam. The ending was especially frustrating because it is everything clichéd that I detest in a romance. Liam's behavior felt totally out of character. It was like his personality did a complete turnaround the last few chapters of the book. I don't see myself continuing with this series in the future.

February Book Summary

February was a really strange month for me. Within one week of applying for a new job, I was offered the job and gave my two weeks notice at my current place of employment. Today was actually my first day of work at the new job. Things are really hectic because they have farms and employees that were affected by the earthquake in Chile. Plus it is the start of the early blueberry season and it's the busiest time of the year. Needless to say I was thrown into the thick of it all. Tomorrow is going to be even busier with me traveling already and having a meeting/dinner with the Florida Blueberry Association in the evening. I have the feeling my life is going to be crazy for a while.

Even though this month was unusual for me, I was still able to read a good number of books. I came in with a total of eleven. My favorite was Only in My Arms by Jo Goodman. I can't say enough about that one. It truly is a gem of a book.
